In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.
Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
English as a second language
English as a second language (ESL) teaching focuses on students learning English in the context of the curriculum they are studying so that they acquire the English language skills relevant to the subject area. Students may receive support from a specialist ESL teacher working with a class teacher or they may be in a separate group for some classes. We work on providing the best support we can for our students.
